Feels Like Home To Me

I did not move abroad. Yet. But I am back in Denmark since last Sunday. And it still feels great. Everything I have been missing at home is coming right back at me here. I can finally wear my Hunter boots without getting started at. Not that I mind staring people. Let them stare all they want. But it is just nice not to be judged by what you are wearing.

We were alse able to set up the apartment a bit more. I have done a lot of cleaning, decluttering, and rearranging over the last couple of days but now everything looks great. And even though I know I have to go back for a while, Denmark already IS home. I guess I am at home were my books are at.

I was also able to meet quite a few great people last week. The new international students arrived and I picked up my own mentee from the airport on Friday. As I had a take home exam Saturday/Sunday I was not able to do a lot of stuff with her yet, but I cannot wait to get to know her more! My fiancé’s mentee and his friend also seemed very nice and I am stocked for the next couple of months to come. Being able to take part in all the exchange activities, even though I am not a student anymore, make the remaining months until my final move so much more durable.

The first big Welcome Party will take place on the 10th and Hawaii is the theme. Flower chains are ordered and even though I am enjoying every day here right now, I cannot wait for Friday in two weeks to come. And for Saturday next week. And, and, and… Stay tuned for more great adventures!

Working My Butt Off

That is a perfect description of what I am doing since I’m about 13 years old. My parents are definitely not rich but we are not poor either and I guess, compared to others, pretty well off. So I always had my “pocket money” to spend on stuff I liked. But my parents also taught my sister and me the value of money and that money does not grow on trees but that you have to work for it. And if we wanted to have something which was just a tad bit too expensive we always had to pay our share or even buy it ourselves.

To be able to afford all those pretty things I wanted to have I started bringing around papers starting in the summer after I turned 13. It was no hard work but it was lousy paid. But at least it was only one afternoon a week, took me only about 2-4 hours, and I was able to read all those cool magazines for free and the night before they actually came out. But after two summers and one hell of a winter I quit. I only earned about 25€ per month but considering my age and the times back then it was quite a lot and I was able to save some money which lasted me a bit.

To earn some extra cash after quitting the newspaper job I started to help out at my dad’s company. In January the annual stock-tacking took place and I usually helped out at 3-4 weekends. With Christmas right before and my birthday in March I was able to make as much money to get over the year without having to take another job.

When I was 16 I was able to take some more serious jobs. I was about to leave for the States in the middle of August and I knew a lot of great shopping opportunities were waiting for me. As I did not want to rely only on my parents’ money I worked at a local entertainment park for three weeks. Hard earned money but worth every cent in the end – including the free rides :-)

After I got back from the States I was looking for another job right away. I wanted to visit my friends in North Dakota again sooner than later so I worked weekends in a hotel. I am not a very good waitress (KLUTZ is my second name) so I only lasted for one summer until about October. But at least I was able to save enough money to buy a ticket for Christmas and some extra cash for shopping.

As I’m not big in waitressing but prefer to sit in an office my mom was able to get me a job at a local architect’s place. His secretary was pregnant and while she was on maternity leave for about 9 months I did what she used to do for him: go to the bank, run errands, answer the mail and the phone, and make coffee. I stopped working there due to my final exams in High School but I would have loved to stay. He paid a lot and I got it cash every time I worked which was awesome!

After graduation I applied as a Sales Assistant at a local clothing store. I love working with the clients and helping them pick out the proper outfits. It was hard work (not fond of all the standing) and it was not paid a lot. But I did quite a lot of hours even with a full study load so I still made quite a bit.

Two years after graduation I started my apprenticeship at a local bank. Compared to other apprenticeships (i.e. when you want to become a baker, hair dresser, etc.) the bank job was paid pretty well. I still got only half of a regular bank clerk’s salary but still had to work full time. After I got my degree in Banking & Finance I went back to university. And once again I needed a new job.

As the local airport was not too far from where I lived I was able to get a great job with a tourism company. Good was the hourly salary (100% extra on Sundays and holidays). Bad were the working hours (night shifts meant getting up at 02:15 to be at work at 03:00 – a.m. that is) and that no one really cared that I still had a full semester work load and needed some time off every once in a while.

Due to moving to the city where my university was at I had to switch jobs anyway. Luckily, because I was exhausted with all the night shifts and the double workload and would not have done it much longer. I went back to retail and enjoyed working in a local store selling clothes I would wear myself and getting a good discount. Sadly I was only allowed to work Fridays and Saturdays (they did not need me the other days) and in order to earn some money I had to work almost every weekend. If your parents live 250km away that is not the best solution. So after about half a year I was looking for something else again.

Due to my apprenticeship, my work experience in general, and my education I was able to score my current job where I am working for almost two years now. Yesterday I got a new contract until the end of March 2011 and I’m still very happy here. I earn good money, it is related to what I am actually studying so it looks good on my CV, and it is an office job (not back pain inflicted).

Well, as you can see I did not exaggerate when I wrote that I was working almost all of the time since I am 13. I love to be not too dependent on my dad’s money and still to be able to life my live at a certain level (I love having a car, I love going on vacation twice a year, and yes I love to go shopping whenever I like). I am working hard and I can spend my money on whatever I like!!! If I want those jeans which might be way too expensive I can still buy them. Yes, if I want to own 50 pairs of shoes I can. And yes, I also love handbags. I do not like to be judged by my shopping habits. I love to shop but I work hard for my money as well. Other people spend money on cars. I like to shop. So what? Nobody’s business. To say it in a Bart Simpson way: EAT YOUR SHORTS!!!

New And Old Adventures

Soon, soon,  soon. About three days and 9 hours to go. And I will be going on vacation to Copenhagen. My second home and soon-to-be ONLY home. I cannot wait.

At the beginning of this year I went to Copenhagen as an Erasmus exchange student to study Economics at Københavns Universitet. As I had spent my 11th year of school at an American High School I always wanted to go abroad again. After spending a year in the States I actually wanted to go there again because I love the time there. But unfortunately my home university does not offer too many exchange possibilities and the US is not one of them. And as American universities and colleges are quite expensive it was never an option to go there by organizing it myself. I had to find another way to go abroad again.

Doing an Erasmus semester, or even a whole Erasmus year, is very popular in Germany and all over Europe. You apply for the programme through your home university, and if you get a spot you do not have to pay tuition at home your university or your exchange university plus you get paid a partial scholarship. Partial because it unfortunately never covers all of your expenses while being abroad. How much you get is decided once a year by your home university and depends on how many students are going abroad in that academic year, and how much money is available. It also does not matter where you go (which is a bit unfair considering that Copenhagen is about twice as expensive as Alicante or some city in Poland) – everybody gets the same amount. So I was lucky to get at least 210€ every month. I also know that some other students got higher plus additional supporting money from their home university so that some of them had around 350€ to spend. But if you desperately need the Erasmus money to do the semester abroad, I am not sure if I would advice you to go at all.

So I applied in March 2009 and only three weeks later I got an acceptance email from the Economics department. I could not believe how lucky I was to get one of the 20 spots which are available for more than 3000 students. And that I even got my first choice! As I wanted to to go somewhere, where I already knew the language (or would learn a new language which I could actually use later on), my choices were limited. Before applying I was able to pick between universities in Austria, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Denmark. As I already speak German, Austria was a no-go. So was Italy and Portugal because I do not plan on living or working there later on. My first choice was right away Copenhagen as I knew that the university is really good, the classes would be all in English, and it is a wonderful city. As I always wanted to improve my Spanish (and because of the good weather) Alicante in Spain was my second choice. But of course I was more than delighted, and very proud, that I got offered a spot at Københavns Universitet.

Due to the whole Erasmus agreement between those two universities the rest was just formality. A couple of weeks later I had my Letter of Acceptance and was able to start the real planning. And I did. Not sure how many flights I booked right away but it was quite a few. The main problem was the different semester times here in Germany and in Copenhagen. My semester at my home university did not end until February 5th with exams until the 12th of February. The spring semester in Copenhagen already started on February 1st and I really did not want to miss the first days – it is were you make the most friends right away. So I booked a flight for January 29th, went back on the 5th of February to write exams until the 12th, and went back by train on the 13th. Too bad I had to miss my own IMECO Welcome Party for that – who knows how things would have turned out ;-) (inside joke)…

Well, enough about my whole exchange semester. For now… There are definitely some stories to come. I just do not want to bore you out of your mind right now. More about my first weeks, the Danish culture and traditions, and me falling in love with the most amazing person ever, later… I cannot wait to get back. I left on June 27th to go back home. Today is the 19th of August. My flight Copenhagen-bound is leaving on the 22nd. It has been not even  two months, but it feels like a lifetime. I hope nothing has changed and that I feel as good as I did when I actually lived there. I terribly miss a lot of awesome people, places, and of course shopping possibilities :-) Cannot wait to move back to Denmark for good. If all works out I only have five more months to go. Keep your fingers crossed that it works out. Because my fashion posts can only get better with that ;-)

Rainbow Bright

Well, I do not know about the soon-to-be-popular colours of the next season yet but considering the fact that all Chanel nail polishes became major hits over the last year we probably only have to take a look at the nails from the last show and we will now…

I did not like to wear nail polish for quite some time. My nails are in not so great shape due to years of swim practice and my cuticles probably never have been worse. But I am working on that and I am using my nail oil every night!!! But in the last 1-2 years some really awesome brands popped up on the market (or just became cool again) and brought out some really pretty colours which are wearable but not too boring. And especially: no glitter alert whatsoever!

Some of my new favourite brands are O.P.I.  and Butter London. Just the bottles alone look so pretty that it is just nice to look at them. The prices are not too cheap but still affordable. And the quality seems to be much better than years back. I especially enjoy the “light feeling” when I wear those new nail polish brands. I used to have the feeling that my nails are actually covered with some heavy material. Due to new technologies (or maybe just due to better quality in general) that feeling is finally gone and makes the wearing of nail polish possible for me again. I also like to see advertisements for “special” colours every once in a while, i.e. movie related. O.P.I. brought out a colour range of four lovely crazy-glittery polishes for “Alice in Wonderland”, and some bright green polishes when “Shrek 3” came out.  Maybe not all of them are wearable on an everyday basis, but always for a special occasion. Butter London brought out some nice “calm” (can a nail polish be calm?!?) colours in honour of Alexander McQueen. My favourite here: “All Hail McQueen”! For lovers of greys and blacks I can also recommend “Chimney Sweep” – a nice charcoal grey which is not too gothic like due to a hint of shimmer (shimmer is NOT glitter!!!).

The “one and only” when it comes to nail polish is of course the deluxe Chanel Le Vernis. Chanel is THE hit when it comes to making new colours popular. Take a look at the models nails and you know which colour will be THE colour next season. After “Jade” 407 (a bright green which was pretty but maybe not too optimal for wearing to work) and “Orange Fizz” 307 (same here) at the beginning of 2009 the famous “Particulière” 505 came out. The 505 is a wonderful greyish-brown colour which goes well with just about every piece of clothing and colour and is wearable to business meetings, lunch dates, and a girl’s night out. It took me a while to get it (it was sold out all over Europe) but since about three months I finally have it and what can I say: I LOVE IT! As it was quite hard to get the 505 I swore myself that next time a new trend colour would come out I would buy it straight away. August 7th was the day and I am a new proud owner of “Paradoxal” 509. At first I was a little bit disappointed though. The 505 and 509 are not too different. Both have some grey and brown in them. And the 509 is definitely NOT as purplish-metallic as shown in various magazines (btw: every single fashion/woman/lifestyle magazine I bought over the last two weeks showed pictures of the new Chanel – and I bought quite a few of them). But not to worry: if you apply the polish twice and see it in sunlight there definitely is more purple than brown in it and I was finally able to tell the difference. Now I cannot wait what the winter season brings.

Before I forget it: I also love the trend of matt colours. And I was (at first) delighted to hear about the possibility of adding a top matt coat to matt my old colours when I feel like it. MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT is all I can say. Do not bother to buy it. Of course I bought a rather cheap version at my local drugstore so of course the O.P.I. or Butter London versions might be much better. But the coat I bought is rather heavy and takes ages to dry. And back was the feeling of a “weight” on my nails. So either buy matt nail polishes right away or keep your nails shiny as before. Matt coat = no good.

Okay, enough about nail polishes. I’m tempted to buy even more. Stupid online shopping. Maybe I should write about that “addiction” soon. I might recognize myself.

Love, S.

PS: For the ones who still weren’t able to get the 505. “Fash Pack” from Butter London looks pretty much the same. Trust me. I got them both.

These Boots Are Made For Walkin’

I love to dress the way I like – not necessarily because I want to express myself, but more because everyone should be able to wear what they like without being judged (and therefore being stared at).

Right now I am obsessed with boots. Ankle boots, over-knee boots, calve-high boots – all different kinds of boots. And not just the height does matter. Also of course the style. Over the last two years I saw Minnetonka shoes and boots quite a lot. Those boots and moccasins are very famous in the States and you can see a lot of celebrities wearing them if you pay attention (not that it matters to me who is wearing what kind of shoes – you just see them more in the magazines if more people wear them). As the name already indicates the shoes come with a Native American touch which makes them quite special, but also not too easy to combine with every-day outfits. I still love them. The more often I look at the pictures the more I decided that I really want to have a pair. I picked out a boot called “Woodstock”, a higher-than-ankle-but-lower-than-regular-calves boot in a nice cognac-brownish color. But I am not getting them. Yet. Main reason is that I just want to wait what other options I will have this winter. I’m soon returning to Copenhagen and in October I am also going to Hamburg and I am sure I will see a lot of new shoes which all look very awesome. I’m also sure that I will not forget about “my” Minnetonka boots – and get them anyway at some point. Sooner or later.

In September I will also receive another pair of boots. The new H&M catalogue came out a few weeks back and I placed my order right away. It is not that I’m a super huge fan of H&M. The quality is not always the best and if they have a nice piece everyone has it right away. But you cannot deny that H&M is great for basics and some standout pieces. And for the rest: it is all about proper combination so that it is not quite that obvious where you got your stuff and style from. So picking even the same accessories as the model on the latest catalogue cover might not be the best solution. Combining H&M stuff with a cool pair of Diesel jeans or some awesome looking boots (there we go again) might be.

Well, back to the boots. They have some greyish suede boots which can be worn as regular boots or over knee boots (though the boot barely reaches over the knee). I got quite some high expectations about those boots and I hope that I’m not too disappointed. In a few weeks time I will know. If everything fails: Minnetonka is still waiting for me!
