Kindle – Reading & Travelling made easy

I love my books. My hard or soft cover real touchable books with that certain papery smell. I love how my books start to look more worn with every time I am readying them again. My dream for the future: having a big bookshelf in my apartment/house in white, covered with glass doors, holding all my precious books I started collecting since I was a little girl.

I was lucky enough that my parents encouraged me to read. I got a library card when I was around 6 years old and read my way around the children and youth section. Several times around that is. I am also the proud owner of all “Dolly” books (in English/British they are called Mallory Tower series I think), I have almost all “Süderhof” books and “Hanni and Nanni” is also not missing in my (children’s) collection. Though those books are for now savely stored away at my parents’ house (mom, if you are reading this: I hope you did not dare to touch the 4 book boxes in the basement) I hope to be reunited with them in the near future.

And my book collection grew over the years and continued to move with me several times (4 times to the day). But as much as I love my real books, which I can touch: we just do not have space to store them anymore at the moment as our apartment is just too small. And I do not want to put them in the slightly moist basement. They are my beloved books after all. So for now I caved in and got something I thought I would never get because I used to hate it: a Kindle.

I decided for the Kindle Paperwhite and it cost me around 120 Euro on the German Amazon. However, the Kindle editions of books are quite a bit cheaper than the paperback versions, so I already saved around 50 Euro on books and will soon have the money “back”, which I initially spend on the Kindle.

As you can see the Kindle is quite a bit smaller than the regular sized iPad. I cannot recall the size of the iPad mini, but the Kindle fits easily into my hand and has more the size of a book. This makes it nice for reading though a bit difficult for pdf documents (as my boyfriend discovered).

The outer cover of the Kindle is some kind of “rubber” material. Nice for holding it but prone for smudges of any kind. It reminds me a lot of the material NARS uses for their products (for the beauty people among us, lol). I am unfortunately still waiting for the cover I ordered and I will not have it until later this month, you can therefore already see how “used” it looks after just a few weeks.

Advantage of the Paperwhite is that you are able to switch the light of the screen. When you are in well-lit rooms you can turn the light all the way up and when it is darker around you, you can turn it all the way down. It makes reading so much better and even with the lights out you can still read in bed :)

SONY DSC

A little feature, which I both love and hate: The Kindle shows you how much is left of your book. It cannot really show you page numbers as you can also change the size of the writing but it shows you how much you have read already in a percent number. If you love the book this is actually quite sad – you want to keep on reading, no? It also gives you an average of how much reading time is left both in the book and in the chapter (it switches in-between), based on your own reading average.

SONY DSC

Even though the Kindle Paperwhite has a touchscreen it cannot be compare dwith an iPad. When you touch the top of the screen a sidebar appears and you can choose what you want to do.

SONY DSC

When you touch the button with the house (home button obviously, duh) you get into the front menu, showing all your books which you loaded on the Kindle.

SONY DSC

Another interesting feature is that below the book name you can see how much of the book you already have read. Bold dots = read, small dots = to be read. I think this is a nice little thing instead of the percentage number.

SONY DSC

I cannot exactly say how long the battery holds except: long. I am still on my second round of battery and that is within several weeks now (and yes, I do love to read and read a lot).

The Kinde is being delivered with a charging cord so you can charger it over the computer, and the computer only. Should you however have an Apple product though you can put the USB end into the Apple charger instead of the computer.

I think for travelling and if you do not want to have books standing around at home this is a nice gadget to have, which makes life pretty easy. As a book lover it can never fully replace my beloved books but for now it will have to do :)

Decorating in Full Swing

Long time, no see. I know – and I am deeply sorry for it. I always had that little voice in the back of my head saying: you have to blog, you have to blog. But just making up a “wish list” or a “best of” just because I have nothing to blog about is just not me. So please bare with me.

School and work have me back and my schedule is PACKED. I am basically gone every day from 07:30 until at least 18:00, if not even later. But it keeps me busy and as long as I have the odd morning or afternoon here and there off I could not be happier. This morning my Macro lecture got cancelled so I am basically still in bed, preparing this blog post for you. I do not have to be at a friends place until 15:00, followed by a networking dinner at Custom House later today (so excited and still have to figure out what to wear – problems of a woman).

Aaaanyhow, back to the actual post now. A couple of weeks ago I bought this lovely acryl table from Zara Home. I was looking for something that could replace a lamp at that very same spot it is standing at right now and this table is perfect.

As we still wanted to have light in that particular corner (we are just used to having a lamp there) we decided on a little tea lamp to go on top with it. We replaced another lamp on the other side of the room as well and went for the same design – so same lamp just in tall.

And yesterday they finally arrived – my new decorating/fashion books to go on top of the table. I heard a lot of good stuff about the “domino” book and am really looking forward to reading it. I heard split opinions about the book from “cupcakes and cashmere” though, as it is supposed to be very close to the blog etc. But as I am not reading the blog (just looked into it every once in a while) I think I will be fine and in the end I also wanted something, which looks pretty as well. I will definitely get a few more of those kind of books but will wait until I am in the States, as they are so much cheaper over there.

How do you like my little side table?

Love, S.

PS: I am apologizing for the bad lighting. I actually took the pictures at around 11:30 in the morning. Can you believe it? But a) is the weather really bad here in Denmark at the moment and it keeps on pouring down and b) do we only have indirect lamps in most of our rooms. We actually only have ceiling lights in hallway and kitchen (spots) but neither in living room nor bedroom. Only the odd lamp here and there. As much as we love it: it makes for very bad pictures in the winter. Just as a little warning for what you will see the next couple of months ;)

So many books, so little time…

Some of you might know how much I love to read. I have purchased 24!!! books since December. And quite a few additional ones in October when I was in the States (just way cheaper over there). I am currently trying to read most of them but I (thankfully) still have a few to go.

I have to admit: I am totally into girly books. And I am not talking about anything romance (gag). I love everything which is about vampires or witches. Yes, not high profile reading but to my defense I have to say that I otherwise (for my studies) have to read a lot of pure Economics books including Wooldrige and Gibbons, etc. So please bare with me and do not judge me for my lighter choices of reading in my free time.

A very good blogger friend of mine, Charlotte, has recently been asking for input about what books to read etc. And I thought it would be nice for you guys if I sum it up in a little video so that I can talk a little bit about the books including my choices why them.

Enjoy.

Give Away

So my lovelies,

I am thinking about a little give away. But of course you have to do something for it as well (nothing is for free now-a-days). But do not worry. It is nothing too hard.

As I will be going on vacation in less than two weeks I need some books to read on the trip. It should be something easy to read (no Tolstoi please) but not make me feel like a brain dead dummy. I already read the Shopaholic series and all of the Gossip girl books btw. And I am into witches (loving the new CW show Secret Circle), vampires, gossip, and shopping. You get the picture.

And here is what you have to do: give me some input about what I could read. The book can be either in English or German.

1. Write me a comment with the book (you are of course welcome to write down several books but only one entry per person will count!) including a valid email address.

2. Link my give away on your blog (if you have one).

For the winner I will go shopping while on vacation and bring you something from Bath & Bodyworks (I am thinking here).

As I have to order soon, so that my dad can bring me the books from Germany, the entry deadline is Monday, 3rd of October, at noon (12 pm), CEST.

Good luck to all of you. I am excited to see all the different books and to pick my favorites.

Love, S.

Reading Makes Smart

My recent post about all my university books made me write about other books I loved to read. I always like to try out all kinds of books, though I tend to stick to the paperback as it is too expensive otherwise. I am also not a huge fan of online books or devices like the Kindle or iPad (at least for reading purposed) as it hurts my eyes too much (I tend to read for hours if you let me).

In this post I will write about my current books and in a few days I will post about my all-time favourites’ and books I also enjoyed a lot!

Before I start with my current books and all-time favourites’ I have to explain: I read books purely out of pleasure. I have to read so much for university and sometimes even for work that in my free time I like to keep it “light”. That does not make me dumb or stupid or shallow!

The books I am currently reading are:

1. Wannabe U: Inside the Corporate University – Gaye Tuchman (978-0226815299)

Wannabe U: Inside the Corporate University

The book and the reasons behind it were feature in the UniversityPost of Københavns Universitet. You can find her interview here. Gaye Tuchman got an insight view about US university structure and why she wrote a book about it. US universities draw my attention as they are so complex and play such a big role in the States. I have not started on the book yet (delay in delivery due to the weather) but I cannot wait to read it.

2. Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything – Steven D. Levitt (978-0061956270)

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

During a recent documentary festival in Copenhagen I was able to attend a free movie event sponsored by Altandetlige. The documentary was about the Freakonomics book – just made as a movie, duh! Levitt is able to explain Economic occurrences with statistic data. He is for example able to explain a decrease in the crime statistic of the US due to new abortion laws about 16 years before. He is also able to explain why your professional success might depend in your first name. Why that is you better find out yourself by reading it! You learn a lot and it is still interesting. There is also a second book out already (Superfreakonomics) which is the part II in the Freakonomics series.

3. Du hast mich auf dem Balkon vergessen: Das Beste aus SMSvonGesternNacht.de – Axel Lilienblum (978-3499626944)

Du hast mich auf dem Balkon vergessen: Das Beste aus SMSvonGesternNacht.de

This is a German book so I am very sorry in advance. I can only hope that someone will make an English version as well. The book is about the internet site SMSvonGesternNacht.de – a site where people can upload text messages from past weekends (usually written while not being sober). The conversations, as usually several messages are posted to show the whole conversation, are super funny and hilarious. I am actually giving this book to my mom for Christmas because I know she will absolutely love it.

Anything else you can recommend? Anything I should read? Post your book suggestion and I will take a look into it!

Love, S.
